April 11th – Spring Ephemerals: A Hike through PERT’s Earliest Wildflowers, Saturday, 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM

Join us for a guided spring hike through the Pennypack Trust to catch the brief, beautiful window of our region’s spring ephemerals! Led by Sam Makler, this walk will explore PERT’s woodlands and stream sides as we seek out the native wildflowers that bloom early, take advantage of open sunlight before the canopy fills out, and then seemingly vanish by early summer. We’ll learn how to identify classic spring ephemerals like trout lily, spring beauty, bloodroot, Dutchman’s breeches, toothwort, and more (depending on what’s in bloom), and explore the clever strategies these plants use to survive the rest of the year underground. Along the way, we’ll talk about woodland ecology, soil preferences, early-season pollinators, and why intact forests are so important for sustaining these delicate plant communities. Expect a moderately paced hike with frequent stops for close-up looks, ID tips, and natural history. Perfect for gardeners, plant lovers, photographers, and anyone who wants to experience one of spring’s best short-lived shows. $10 per person. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited to 15 participants.
