October 20th – Beech Leaf Disease Walking Tour, Tuesday, 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM
In summer 2024, beech leaf disease (BLD) was discovered in American beech trees along the northern edge of the Pennypack Preserve. In 2025, Pennypack Trust began hosting a research team from Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories to study different methods—including silvicultural thinning and chemical injections—for slowing the progression of BLD and preserving one of our most heavily American beech-dominated forest tracts. Now that the experimental treatments have been completed, researchers will monitor their effects on the trees over the next five years. Join Dr. Matthew Borden, plant pathologist at Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories, to learn about BLD, the research conducted at Pennypack, and the next steps in the study. Visit pennypacktrust.org/bld to learn more.
