In 2010, the Trust added 30 acres of meadow in Bryn Athyn to its patchwork of protected landscape. Known as Cathedral Meadows, the area contains a shallow pond, and a section of Cairn Run, an important stream that flows into the Pennypack Creek. With its agricultural legacy and heavily invaded state, the site is a prime example of the land management challenges that stewards face at the Trust and in our region. Deer browsing and porcelain berry, mile-a-minute and other invasive vegetation can quickly overwhelm native plant communities and the diverse fauna that inhabit them. Like much of the Trust’s forests and grasslands, Cathedral Meadows will require long-term, persistent restoration practices to re-establish the diverse native vegetation and stabilize the eroding stream banks. Over the past year, staff have begun tackling the invaded tree lines, experimenting with live staking to stabilize streambanks, and planting native trees alongside Cairn Run for shade. Accompany Pennypack Trust Stewardship staff to learn about our restoration progress in this area, which is only accessible via guided tours. This walking tour takes about two and a half hours and consists of rough trails and hills. Limited to 20 participants. Pennypack Trust Members Only. Pre-registration required. $5 Per Person.
