Over the past decades, the Pennypack Trust has been fortunate to have several botanists document the preserve plant communities and make long-term management decisions. When he began his stewardship internship at the Trust three years ago, Sam Makler brought with him a passion for learning plants and spent many hours wandering the preserve recording species he identified, even finding several species that had not been previously recorded. Now a staff member, Sam uses his expertise in land management and horticulture to monitor plant communities throughout the preserve and explore management that best addresses the challenges brought on by deer browse, invasive species, and long-term disturbance in our ecosystems. Join Sam as he discusses the undocumented species he discovered, plant inventories and the different restoration strategies including exclosures, native seed propagation and selective mowing. Free.
