October 14th – Tour of MacPhee Wildlife Sanctuary, Saturday, 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM
The Pennypack Trust has reached 900 acres of protected open space with our newest acquisition–the Margaret V. MacPhee Wildlife Sanctuary. Like much of the land in the Pennypack Preserve, the 38-acre property was cultivated open farmland in 18th century. Seeking respite from city life, Andrew Vinton Brown, a successful lens grinder in Philadelphia, purchased the property for his family in 1905. Over the years, the land became a bustling country estate with cultivated crops, elegant flower gardens, reflecting pools and a growing family. Subsequent generations continued to prosper on the property, allowing much of the farmland to transition into dense forest for wildlife habitat. As the third generation, Margaret MacPhee was committed to preserving the land to support local wildlife.
Having just acquired the property, the Trust intends to continue Margaret’s legacy as stewards of its habitats. Staff will develop a long-term management plan to restore native diversity and improve wildlife habitat quality. This property will remain private and closed to daily public access as Margaret intended. Join Pennypack Trust staff on a tour to learn about our management plan and become the first visitors to the Margaret V. MacPhee Wildlife Sanctuary!
Pennypack Trust members only. Limited to 19 participants. Pre-registration is required. $5 Per person.

October 24th – Salt Watch, Tuesday, 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Winter is coming! Road salt keeps us safe on roads and sidewalks during the winter months. Towns, cities, businesses, and individuals dump roughly 20 million tons of salt every year. And as snow melts or rain falls, that salt gets washed into our storm drains, our streams, and even into our drinking water. Join The Pennypack Trust, Wissahickon Trails, Tookany Tacony Frankford Watershed Partnership, and the Izaak Walton League of America to learn how to track road salt in our waterways by participating in Salt Watch. Cancelled. October 28th – Save Our Streams (Certification Course), Saturday, 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Unfortunately, this has been cancelled.
Become an official certified Save Our Streams (SOS) water quality monitor to see how healthy your local streams are. SOS is a great way to test water quality by collecting and identifying underwater insects, called macroinvertebrates. The Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust is partnering with the Izaak Walton League to provide a workshop for those who wish to become a certified SOS Monitor and have their data entered into a nationwide water quality database. To become a certified SOS Monitor, volunteers must complete the online portion, attend a field training session, and pass a protocol quiz. Attendees must complete the online portion of the certification to attend. Free, but pre-registration is required. Space is limited.

November 12th – Tour of Cathedral Meadows, Sunday, 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM
In 2010, the Trust added 30 acres of meadow in Bryn Athyn to its patchwork of protected landscape. Known as Cathedral Meadows, the area contains a shallow pond, and a section of Cairn Run, an important stream that flows into the Pennypack Creek. With its agricultural legacy and heavily invaded state, the site is a prime example of the land management challenges that stewards face at the Trust and in our region. Deer browsing and porcelain berry, mile-a-minute and other invasive vegetation can quickly overwhelm native plant communities and the diverse fauna that inhabit them. Like much of the Trust’s forests and grasslands, Cathedral Meadows will require long-term, persistent restoration practices to re-establish the diverse native vegetation and stabilize the eroding stream banks. Over the past year, staff have begun tackling the invaded tree lines, experimenting with live staking to stabilize streambanks, and planting native trees alongside Cairn Run for shade. Accompany Pennypack Trust Stewardship staff to learn about our restoration progress in this area, which is only accessible via guided tours. This walking tour takes about two and a half hours and consists of rough trails and hills. Limited to 20 participants. Pennypack Trust Members Only. Pre-registration required. $5 Per Person.
