May 16^th – Butterflies and Their Host Plants: A Hike through PERT’s Living Landscape

Join us for a guided hike through the Pennypack Trust focused on the fascinating relationships between butterflies and the native plants they depend on! Led by Sam Makler, this walk will travel the trails of meadows, woodlands, and wetland edges as we explore the host plants that support the life cycles of our local butterflies. From the monarch and its relationship with milkweed to the hidden lives of hairstreaks, swallowtails, and azures, we’ll learn how butterflies select their host plants, why these connections matter, and how these delicate pollinators are tied to the plant communities of PERT. Along the way, we’ll identify key host species, discuss plant-insect interactions, and talk about how to support butterfly populations in gardens and restoration landscapes. Expect a moderately paced hike with frequent stops to observe butterflies and the plants they rely on. Whether you’re an avid gardener, naturalist, or just curious about native biodiversity, this walk offers a great overview of our local network of plants and pollinators. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited to 15 participants.
