October 6th – Tour of MacPhee Wildlife Sanctuary, Sunday, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Last Spring the Pennypack Trust acquired the Margaret V. MacPhee Wildlife Sanctuary. Like much of the land in the Pennypack Preserve, the 38-acre property was cultivated open farmland in 18th century. Seeking respite from city life, Andrew Vinton Brown, a successful lens grinder in Philadelphia, purchased the property for his family in 1905. Over the years, the land became a bustling country estate with cultivated crops, elegant flower gardens, reflecting pools and a growing family. Subsequent generations continued to prosper on the property, allowing much of the farmland to transition into dense forest for wildlife habitat. As the third generation, Margaret MacPhee was committed to preserving the land to support local wildlife. Having just acquired the property, the Trust intends to continue Margaret’s legacy as stewards of its habitats. Staff will develop a long-term management plan to restore native diversity and improve wildlife habitat quality.  This property will remain private and closed to daily public access as Margaret intended. Join Pennypack Trust staff on a tour to learn about our management plan and become the first visitors to the Margaret V. MacPhee Wildlife Sanctuary! For Pennypack Trust members only. Limited to 18 participants. Pre-registration is required. $5 Per person.
